Grade 1 winner Competitive Edge, a speedy colt from Super Saver’s first crop, is now retired to stud at Ashford near Versailles, KY. Back in May 2015, he won the Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Derby undercard, so these are a few photos from that week.

Bolo, the stunning colt by Temple City, was out on the track early on Kentucky Oaks morning to stretch his legs. He always stands out in a crowd.

Javier Castellano and Catalina Red, another speedy son of Munnings, won the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes on the Kentucky Derby undercard on Saturday. He wasn’t far off Groupie Doll’s track record, with the two greys–Calculator and Kobe’s Back–behind him to complete the trifecta.

Part of Mohaymen’s routine includes being grazed three times per day for at least 30 minutes. An hour after his run in the Kentucky Derby, where he finished a respectable 4th, he was intently munching away on the green grass behind his barn. Such a wonderfully calm, lovely horse.

Once Nyquist returned from the detention barn after the Derby, his happy people quickly hosed down his legs and gave him some love. His barn backs up to Longfield Avenue, which is full of houses and people walking by. Someone across the street started playing ‘We Are The Champions’ by Queen as Nyquist stood there, and his ears perked up as he watched the crowd of people across the street. What a cool horse!

I took a brief trip to Kentucky in early October 2015, so of course I had to stop by Churchill Downs. Ride On Curlin is always interested in what’s going on around the barn until–yaaaawn–you start to bore him.

Samraat on the Comeback

Samraat, 5th in the Kentucky Derby and 6th in the Belmont in 2014, is back on the work tab after about one year off. He suffered a stress fracture last year in the Belmont, so it looks like they’ve taken their time with him and brought him back slowly. He’s been galloping for awhile, and posted his second workout this morning at Aqueduct.

I watched him quite a bit last year while he was at Churchill Downs, and he seemed like a really calm, easy-going colt. I wish him and his connections all the best, so here’s hoping for a successful comeback for this handsome guy!

Pioneerof the Nile–2nd in the 2009 Kentucky Derby to Mine That Bird–would be proud to know that his son, American Pharoah, got the win two weeks ago in the 2015 Kentucky Derby. Hopefully Pharoah will also have better luck in the Preakness than his papa, who finished 11th behind Rachel Alexandra in the ’09 edition.

Untapable at Dawn

Untapable was out for an early gallop while I was at Churchill Downs one morning during Derby week. The lighting for photos isn’t the best before the sun comes up, but she shines through anyway!
